Potomac Berry Smash

In August, wild blackberries burst from the tangles of ungrowth in northern Virginia. I picked up a pint of plump and inky berries at the Potomac Vegetable Farm stand across the street and set to work on a refreshing drink in tune with the season.

This recipe calls for the extra step of wrapping blackberries in a cheesecloth -- the reason is to keep their seeds tidily in the glass.

Potomac Berry Smash

2 oz vodka
1/4 lemon
6 fresh blackberries wrapped in cheesecloth
Lemon-lime soda

Wrap the blackberries in a 4" by 4" piece of cheesecloth and tie into a purse. Drop the purse into a highball glass, along with the lemon and vodka. Muddle until fruit is crushed and ingredients are combined. Top with crushed ice and lemon-lime soda.
